4.1.2011 -- UCSD's faculty are awarded three 2010 Hartwell Foundation Individual Biomedical Research Awards. This is a terrific accomplishment and results in nearly 1 million dollars in funding over the next three years. UCSD Health Sciences congratulates the following recipients:
8.24.2011 -- Dr. George Sen is named the Ray Thomas Edwards Foundation recipient for 2011. The award amount is $150,000 over 3 years. Dr. Sen was selected by the LSLSC to move forward and competed against colleagues from the Salk Institute as well as The Scripps Research Institute. The Limited Submission Committee and UCSD Health Sciences congratulate Dr. Sen on this accomplishment!
9.20.2011 -- The internal review process is complete for several awards. Nominees will move forward to the application phase with the sponsor institution. 9.29.2011 -- Initial review for the UCSD Health Sciences and Roche Extending Innovation Network program is complete. This is the pioneer venture for this program, which holds great potential for partnering between UCSD faculty and Roche. The Roche Steering Committee, consisting of Drs. Joan Heller Brown and Michael Gilson, as well the review committee and UCSD Health Sciences congratulate these 3 scientists on the accomplishment of moving to phase 2 review with Roche:

10.3.2011 -- Challenging prevailing theories…Dr. Kumar Sharma, professor of medicine at UC San Diego’s School of Medicine and director of the Center for Renal Translational Medicine, has received a $5.9 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, to study kidney complications related to type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The grant encourages “groundbreaking original research addressing fundamental questions or major obstacles in type 1 diabetes research, including studies that challenge current dogma.” Read more about the significant grant.

10.7.2011 -- Internal review has concluded for this year's Hartwell Foundation Individual Biomedical Research awards and the Pew Charitable Trusts Scholars in the Biomedical Sciences award. We congratulate the following applicants on being selected by the internal review committee:
