Are awarded annually and span seven disciplines of science: chemistry, computer and cognitive science, earth and environmental science, electrical engineering, life science, mechanical engineering, and physics. Nominations for the Benjamin Franklin Medals are accepted on a rolling basis. The award is presented to an individual. If group work is selected, an individual must be selected as the group's leading scientist and the award and prize will be presented to him or her. Candidates for the award must be living, and the winner must participate in the Awards Ceremony, to be held on April 26, 2012 in Philadelphia. In cases of candidates with equal technical merit, the factor of current economic value of the discovery or application will weigh favorably on behalf of the candidate.
